What is a Family-School Compact?

A School & Family Compact for Achievement is an agreement that families and schools develop together. It explains how families and schools will work together to make sure all of our students reach grade level standards.

• Describe how teachers will help students develop those skills using high quality instruction 

• Share strategies families can use at home 

• Explain how teachers and families will communicate about student progress

Families and school staff of Sunset Park School developed this compact. Meetings are held each year to make changes based on student needs. If you would like to volunteer to revise next year’s compact, please call the school. 

Sunset Park School & Family Compact for Achievement

Learning takes place when our children are motivated, interested, and aware that schools and families are involved, concerned, and committed to their education. This compact is a promise to work together as a team. 

As a student, my goal is to: 

1. Communicate with my teacher and family about my progress and what I am learning. 

2. Pay attention and do my best work in all classes and at home, so I can reach my future goals. 

3. Work on math and reading strategies at home, and turn my work in when it is due. 

4. Be Safe, Honest, Accountable, Respectful and Kind 

As a family, our goal is to: 

1. Communicate with the school about our child’s progress, learning, and behavior. 

2. Actively participate in opportunities and utilize resources to support our child in being the best they can be. 

3. Ask our child each day to explain or demonstrate a concept they learned in school. 

4. Encourage your child to demonstrate SHARK behaviors. 

As a school, our goal is to: 

1. Communicate with families about their child’s progress in all subject areas through conferences, phone calls, text messages, Infinite Campus/parent portal, emails, report cards, interim reports, teacher/ school web pages, and social media.

2. Provide parent workshops and learning materials/resources to work with their children at home. 

3. Continually learn new teaching techniques and use technology to teach our students. 

4. Teach and reinforce SHARK rules and recognize positive effort, achievement, and behavior. 

5. We will hold at 5 Title 1 Family Engagement events this school year. They will be held in August, September, November, December and March

The federal law requires school districts to notify parents of children attending a Title I school of their right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct their child.

As a recipient of Title I funds, New Hanover County Schools will provide you with this information in a timely manner if you request it. Specifically, you have the right to request the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:

• Whether the teacher meets the state qualifications and licensing criteria for the grades and core academic subjects he or she teaches.
• Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency status because of special circumstances.
• The teacher’s college major, whether the teacher has any advanced degrees, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree.
• Whether teacher assistants provide services to your child and, if so, their qualifications.
